Abbreviated Odds & Ends: News/Humor (with a "Who Lost the Fortnight?" poll)

I post a weekly diary of historical notes, arts & science items, foreign news (often receiving little notice in the US) and whimsical pieces from the outside world that I often feature in "Cheers & Jeers".

OK, you've been warned - here is this week's tomfoolery material that I posted.

CHEERS to Bill and Michael in PWM and ...... well, each of you at Cheers and Jeers. Have a fabulous weekend .... and week ahead.

PROGRAMMING NOTE having been away for a family wedding, this is an abbreviated version of my weekly wrap-up diary (and the poll may well be incomplete). In that case, if a late-breaking entry appears: write-it-in

ART NOTES— an exhibition entitled David Plowden: By the Wayside— a career retrospective of a 92 year-old black-and-white photographer which includes trains, ships, bridges, farms and fields, steel mills, and the people of a disappearing America — is at the Wichita, Kansas Art Museum through June 8th.

                 Scranton, Pennsylvania (1964)

YOUR WEEKEND READ is this one in the Florida Phoenix by former NPR essayist Diane Roberts, with the title MAGA Mean Girls are horrible for the sheer hell of it… except that not all of her targets in this essay … are female.

SATURDAY's CHILD is named Sophie the Cat— an Alberta kitteh who had gone missing seven years ago, eventually taking shelter in a hole at a local car wash … and after months of trying: finally trapped and reunited due to her microchip.

         Sophie the Cat

BRAIN TEASER— The BBC has a four-part quiz on the entire year’s news: first, Part One, followed by Part Two, then Part Three, and finally Part Four. Here is this week’s usually easier, less UK-centered New York Times quiz.

Reader-suggested MOTHER_DAUGHTER?— from Audri: English TV/film stars Victoria Tennant (The Winds of War) and Olivia D’Abo (The Wonder Years). Whaddya think?

Victoria Tennant (b. 1950)

    Olivia D’Abo (b. 1969)

...... and finally, for a song of the week ...........................… this is the final song that I listen to each year. Alas, it’s a bit melancholy: as the bluesman John Mayall died this past July at age 90 … just three months before his induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (as an Early Influence, in helping spread the blues in the UK).
