By now, you’ve no doubt learned not only of the decision of Mitt Romney to announce he will not seek re-election, but also the excerpt from the biography of him written by the reporter McKay Coppins. In his review of it, Steve Schmidt reminded me of my old pet peeve (emphasis mine):
Over and over again, for many many years the whole of the Republican Party would say one thing in private about Trump and another thing in public. It became commonplace on TV sets, green rooms, Senate cloak rooms and everywhere politicians, consultants, activists and media gathered. When the camera lights went on, Trump became their forever führer. The second that they turned off, he became a con man and a fraud again. The cowardice and lack of principle are incandescent.
More than a dozen years ago, Charlie Pierce used that term about a different Utah Republican (interestingly, who had been a GOP primary candidate against Mitt Romney, himself):
I have to admit, I came to like Jon Huntsman a little bit during his brief stint as a Republican presidential candidate. He was an Out Now guy in regards to Afghanistan, which appealed to me. And he had the undeniable asset of Not Being Insane, which was enough to allow him to maintain his viability almost all the way to Easter.
But after venturing into why-can’t-we-just-get-along about the deficit and live-and-let-live:
Can you see the problem here? Of course, you can. Huntsman is another Green Room Republican, beloved of the courtier press with its deficit-fetishism and its maudlin shawlie's worship of "bipartisanship."
Not that the GOP presidential candidates in the run-up to the 2016 primaries necessarily liked the green rooms assigned to them at debate venues:
Politico reported that top-tier candidates like Trump were assigned plush, comfortable quarters, while lower-tier candidates didn't fare as well. Ken McKay, Christie's campaign manager was quoted by Politico saying, "This is ridiculous....We're in a restroom." And Fiorina apparently has a jacuzzi.
