I post a weekly diary of historical notes, arts & science items, foreign news (often receiving little notice in the US) and whimsical pieces from the outside world that I often feature in "Cheers & Jeers".

OK, you've been warned - here is this week's tomfoolery material that I posted.

CHEERS to Bill and Michael in PWM, our Laramie, Wyoming-based friend Irish Patti and ...... well, each of you at Cheers and Jeers. Have a fabulous weekend .... and week ahead.

ART NOTES— a major retrospective of the works of Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki are featured at the recent grand opening of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles, California to June 5th, 2022.

@ 6067 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA

CHEERS to an excellent long weekend — meeting up with friends and some family on Friday, with some high school chums on Saturday and on Sunday: a nice walk around my old Long Island neighborhood (where I lived over fifty years ago).

Mostly what I remember is gone, with a few exceptions: the church and school that I attended, and the place we used to get our baked goods from: Reisterer’s Bakery (which earlier this week celebrated its 90th birthday). Today it has in-store dining ….. and a coffee with a crispy buttered roll brought me back in time.

THURSDAY's CHILD is named Walter the Hero Cat— an English kitteh who senses when a Type 1 diabetic woman’s blood sugar plummets and awakens her.

YOUR WEEKEND READ is by Eric Alterman— whose Friday newsletter is a nice compilation of media criticism, politics and music, well worth subscribing to — writing this week, “You can now find a complete archive of more than 22,000 of Terry Gross’s invaluable interviews on WHYY’s Fresh Air stretching back 40 years here, and I literally cannot think of a better or more entertaining way to educate yourself about whatever important issue or famous person might interest you”.

FRIDAY's CHILD is named Weasley the Hero Cat— an English kitteh who not only looks after the family dog and younger cat … but has also donated blood ten times: described as “Comfortable donating and purrs so much they even find it difficult to hear his heartbeat”.

BRAIN TEASER— try this Quiz of the Week's News from the BBC ...… and the usually easier, less UK-centered New York Times quiz.

THIS COMING SUNDAY I will feature Odds & Ends - a wrap-up diary of my postings, circa 11 AM Eastern (8 AM Pacific). I hope you'll vote in the "Who Lost the Fortnight?!?" poll (a mirror image of the one Bill posts here). Dang, there are already bushel baskets of misfits lined-up for your review (such as Nicolas Sarkozy, R Kelly, Alex Jones, Britney Spears’ father, the mayor of Rochester, NY and ESPN’s Sage Steele) .... and the week's not over yet.

SEPARATED at BIRTH— the actor Tom Atkins (from his role in the horror film Halloween III) … and the original Brawny paper towel model.

...... and finally, for a song of the week ..........................… having quite a hectic week since my return on Tuesday, and thus no time for a full profile.

Instead, just enough time to feature this quintet of young women calling themselves Plaisir de Chanter (the Joy of Singing). They use the echo in the church of St. Sauveur à La Rochelle — a city of 75,000 on the west coast of France — to sing the John Lennon song Because from Abbey Road.

John wrote it using Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata (in reverse) and the original features himself, Paul and George (triple-overdubbed). Here, five voices shine.

Because the world is round it turns me on Because the world is round Because the wind is high it blows my mind Because the wind is high

Love is old, love is new Love is all, love is you Because the sky is blue, it makes me cry Because the sky is blue
