An unexpected gift from an unexpected source, after the jump ……….
But first: Top Comments appears nightly, as a round-up of the best comments on Daily Kos. Surely ... you come across comments daily that are perceptive, apropos and .. well, perhaps even humorous. But they are more meaningful if they're well-known ... which is where you come in (especially in diaries/stories receiving little attention).------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Send your nominations to TopComments at gmail dot com by 9:30 PM Eastern Time nightly, or by our KosMail message board. Please indicate (a) why you liked the comment, and (b) your Dkos user name (to properly credit you) as well as a link to the comment itself.
My mother was an only child, and sometimes an only child can be rather pampered. Growing up, when my brother and I had to scrape-together five pennies to buy a pack of baseball cards (it was the mid-60’s), our neighbor Roger could walk into the luncheonette … and buy the display box. (Envy!!!)
In my mother’s case, though: she always felt emotionally deprived (positing that her mother wanted to ensure she was not spoiled) which always left a tension. And so my mother always loved not only her own children, but other people’s: always smiling at babies and young tykes. That carried-over to myself, as well: always smiling at babies/young tykes from a distance.
I am the controller of a social service agency for developmental disabilities (those on the autism spectrum, Down’s syndrome, cerebral palsy, etc). Thus it is not uncommon for families to come to our offices with children in tow.
Last year, after purchasing a coffee from a nearby shop, I entered our elevator with a young couple — with the father holding an eighteen month-old(?) child holding a sippy-cup. I smiled at her .. to which she turned the cup slightly and extended it — as if to offer me a sip! I laughed and pointed to my left hand saying, “But I just bought a coffee, sweetheart!” Her parents laughed as they got off on an interim floor … and I had a smile that lasted me through a day of a dull meeting and a conference call.
My co-worker Carissa sometimes brings her eight year-old daughter Collette into the office and when I smile at her: her mother always says, “Can you say hi to Ed?” In the past, some bashful looks — what I would have done at her age — but recently, she was there with a friend playing in the hallway … and paying me no mind. Maturity, I thought.
And then a bit later …. Carissa handed me this coloring book page. It is on the wall outside my office … ‘nuff said.
Now, on to Top Comments:
From Zen Trainer:
In the diary by Meteor Blades about state attorneys general seeking to have the Equal Rights Amendment codified — I was sputtering away trying to find a response to a comment when I scrolled down (scrolling while fuming) and found this top comment by MB himself— I like when staff writers stick around to comment, you get great stuff like this!
From Eyesbright:
In the front-page story about the efforts by Sen. Rand Paul to have the whistle-blower killed — this comment by northleft struck me as profound (more profound than it seems at first).
From CwV:
In the diary by theOtherBarry about the use of foreign bots in fomenting a US civil war— this comment by ShamballaJones is not only quite perceptive, but also the start of a thread of one person wrestling with spell-checker.
Highlighted by apotropaic:
In the front-page story about the Administration claiming that only impeachment applies to him, not subpoenas — CyberMindGrll had a comment I replied to with: “Tweet this. It will go viral. Top comment”.
And from Ed Tracey, your faithful correspondent this evening ........
In the diary by Aldous J Pennyfarthing about yesterday’s astounding charge by former Florida AG Pam Bondi, accusing Hunter Biden of going fishing with … ummmm …. his father — first, LaPinturaBella compares Pam to a character in a Ken Kesey novel ….. which prompts Pistoleto to make an alternate comparison to a Mel Brooks movie, instead.
TOP PHOTOSJanuary 29th, 2020 Next - enjoy jotter's wonderful *PictureQuilt™* below. Just click on the picture and it will magically take you to the comment that features that photo. (NOTE: Any missing images in the Quilt were removed because (a) they were from an unapproved source that somehow snuck through in the comments, or (b) it was an image from the DailyKos Image Library which didn't have permissions set to allow others to use it.) |
And lastly: yesterday's Top Mojo - mega-mojo to the intrepid mik ...... who rescued this feature from oblivion:
