A look behind as well as ahead, after the jump …. But first: Top Comments appears nightly, as a round-up of the best comments on Daily Kos. Surely ... you come across comments daily that are perceptive, apropos and .. well, perhaps even humorous. But they are more meaningful if they're well-known ... which is where you come in (especially in diaries/stories receiving little attention). The past decade began on some sour notes for me: having a torn quadriceps, and being in the second bout of massive layoffs at the medical center I had worked at for nearly a dozen years. Two subsequent employers also had major layoffs. The decade is ending on an even keel — a good working environment the past four years — and at an agency for those with Down’s syndrome and the autism spectrum (which my nephew is part of, two hundred miles away). While I am in the business office, and not dealing with the people who need our services: I am definitely not toiling at a widgets plant, either. My family situation is well, and we capped off 2019 with our annual party for three old chums with birthdays during Christmas week (and a different friend’s later marriage to a woman born during that week now makes it four). The 44th year we have held this, with thirty + attendees. As for politics? While many people I know are afraid that 2016 will be repeated — and with voter suppression and the lack of willingness on the part of our political opponents to stop foreign influence. I can’t blame them — I have a more optimistic outlook. I focus on the elections held in 2017, 2018 and 2019: where we gained many officeholders, and in those special elections that we lost: it was by much smaller margins (as the relentless Steve Kornacki always reminded us) than before. 2016’s outcome was expected by no one — this year, we are ready for anything. In our state’s U.S. Senate election this year, as Jeanne Shaheen seeks her third term: I am actually disappointed that a potential GOP challenger decided to drop-out this week. Although Corey Lewandowski said “I am certain I would have won” — and on name recognition alone (plus the Trumpster’s backing) he might well had gotten the GOP nomination — I felt certain he’d lose in a general election. Oh well — I still think she’d win against whomever, but that would have been sweet, to see that guy get his walking papers. Each year, I set out some goals for the new year — calling them resolutions gives a comic flavor to it, plus if it isn’t able to be measured (knowing whether you have succeeded, or at least made progress) it loses impetus. Rather, I have set goals for myself — and several I have started on already. One of course is to attend Netroots Nation in Denver this coming August, and hope that we can cross paths there. On item I plan to get off my bucket list: attend the annual Paul Winter Consort’s annual Solstice Concert this coming December at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in NYC. I’ve listened to this on the radio before and am finally going to make it (there are usually 3 nights of shows each year). And unlike this year (where we had the weird Christmas and New Year’s on a Wednesday) this is what awaits us: That’s it for me on the new year — anything you’d like to add, please describe in the comments. I’ll close with my annual New Year’s song. This is the very mellow, contemplative Goodbye, December from bluesman John Mayall - whom I saw give a standout show seven years ago at age 79 (and who is now 86). This tune, though, comes from his 1971 recording Back to the Roots (featuring many of his former star musicians). This tune showcases Eric Clapton (as well as the recently-deceased Canned Heat bassist Larry Taylor). Happy New Year, everyone.

And from Ed Tracey, your faithful correspondent this evening ........ In the diary by Dorothy He about the lengths that Mitch McConnell will go to save the Trumpster’s bacon — nela1872 advises us that there is more than one epithet gracing the Bluegrass State billboards.
