CHEERS to Bill and Michael in PWM, our Wyoming-based friend Irish Patti and ...... well, each of you at Cheers and Jeers. Have a fabulous weekend .... and week ahead, as we begin 2016 in earnest.

ART NOTES — an exhibition entitled Our America: The Latino Presence in American Art is at the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock to January 17th.

in Little Rock to 1/17/2016

HOPES that a long-delayed election in the war-torn Central African Republic will bring peace, following a constitutional referendum held earlier this month.

THURSDAY's CHILD is named Miko the Cat — a German kitteh who went missing in 2008 … but was located just in time for Christmas.

CHEERS to a wonderful Yuletide weekend with family. Then, as host of our annual birthday party for three old chums with birthdays during Christmas week, which we held for the 40th year on Saturday, December 26. A lotta memories were shared, and some records with picture-sleeves were given as gag gifts. Like this 1991 song (four years before Jerry G’s actual death).

EDUCATION NOTES — the South American nation of Chile is joining those planning to offer free university education to most students —  fulfilling a campaign promise of president Michelle Bachelet — in phases, with 100% coverage achieved by the year 2020.

FRIDAY's CHILDREN are named Mau and Lua the Cats — adopted by a Danish couple who lived in the US for several years (and loved domestic shorthair black cats) … but had returned to Denmark, where domestic shorthairs do not exist. So they arranged for an adoption from nearly 5,000 miles away.

BRAIN TEASERS - the BBC skipped the weekly news quiz, and instead had four different Quiz of the Year’s News segments last week (with 12 questions each). Part One focused on Who, then Part Two focused on What, followed by Part Three which looked at Why, and lastly Part Four, which looked at Where, of course.

SEPARATED at BIRTH — Washington Post pundit Chris Cillizza and the (now-jailed) Jared Fogle — the former Subway pitchman.

...... and finally, for a song of the week ...........................… no time for even a mini-profile this holiday week. So I'll just reprise my favorite New Year's song. This is the very mellow, contemplative Goodbye, December from bluesman John Mayall - whom I saw give a standout show three years ago at age 79 (and who is now 82). This tune, though, comes from his 1971 Back to the Roots album (featuring many of his former star musicians). This tune showcases Eric Clapton (as well as long-time Canned Heat bassist Larry Taylor). And below you can hear it.

          Back to the Roots (1971)

Time for reflection Winter is here Goodbye, December The passing away of the year

Watching the day of the wind Blowing the dirt from the sky Clearing the air for tomorrow Bidding December goodbye

Make celebration Another year is gone Now part of history Gotta be moving along

Look for the sunrise Old days are dead Goodbye, December Got a big future ahead
