A quick look at the World Cup, then opening-up-the-floor for your thoughts, after the jump ….
But first: Top Comments appears nightly, as a round-up of the best comments on Daily Kos. Surely ... you come across comments daily that are perceptive, apropos and .. well, perhaps even humorous. But they are more meaningful if they're well-known ... which is where you come in (especially in diaries/stories receiving little attention).------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Send your nominations to TopComments at gmail dot com by 9:30 PM Eastern Time nightly, or by our KosMail message board. Please indicate (a) why you liked the comment, and (b) your Dkos user name (to properly credit you) as well as a link to the comment itself.
In watching the 2018 World Cup — while I cringed that the US team bungled its way out of qualifying: so glad that many fellow Americans will not be filling-the-coffers of the Vladinator by traveling to Russia. Some early surprises:
#1 — Defending champion Germany loses to Mexico, 1-0 …. and wouldn’t this be sweet for the team of “rapists” to advance far in the World Cup? I doubt the Trumpster pays any attention ….. but his tormentor Vicente Fox does.
#2 — Defending runner-up Argentina held to a 1-1 draw by Iceland — Iceland is the smallest country to qualify for the WC, and they have charmed-the-world in doing so.
#3 — Brazil held to a 1-1 draw by Switzerland — the Swiss are a good team, but Brazil was hoping to make amends when (four years ago on their home turf) they were humiliated by Germany 7-1, then shut-out by the Netherlands 3-0 in the bronze medal match. This wasn’t a bad outcome … but their fans expect more.
DESPITE the USA, Italy and the Netherlands not qualifying for the World Cup that began this week in Russia — more games will be seen on broadcast (free) TV than ever before, on the Fox broadcast channel (where you watch The Simpsons and the NFL), with the rest on Fox Sports cable — and the schedule is listed at this link.

Meanwhile, have a look at Odds & Ends - the weekly wrap-up diary of my drivel writings that have appeared in Cheers & Jeers and elsewhere: with some art, foreign news and just plain whimsy.
The "Who Lost the Week?!?!?" poll includes the likes of Vince Vaughn, Volkswagen, Paul Manafort, Jerry Springer, Michael Cohen and Mark Sanford ... which I hope you'll cast a ballot in.
Plus, a profile of the songwriter/producer Jerry Fuller — who wrote Top Ten singles for Ricky Nelson, Gary Puckett and the Union Gap, O.C. Smith and Collin Raye … has produced hit records for Mac Davis, Johnny Mathis, the Knickerbockers (of “Lies” fame), Roger Miller and the Peanut Butter Conspiracy …. and whose songs have also been recorded by Lou Rawls, The Kingston Trio, Cher, Ray Charles, Don McLean, jazzman Art Farmer, the Ventures, Dottie West, Barbara Mandrell, Vanessa Williams and others across the musical spectrum.
It is all at this link - stop by to cast a ballot, and help keep this crazy train rolling.
Now, on to Top Comments:

From Ed Tracey, your faithful correspondent this evening ........
In the diary by Neeta Lind about the memorial service for Sean Wang (screen name BruinKid) who died at only age 38 — hard to choose a great comment (they all were) but paradise50 spoke for me: I only met him at Netroots Nation, and he was shy at first, but was always so friendly. I didn’t know him well … paradise50 has a bit more to say.
And in the diary by durrati about the gun-totin’ Kent State University graduate (now on NRA-TV) Kaitlyn Bennett, who sunbathed on an American flag to own-the-libs ….. anastasia p notes that she is atypical of KSU graduates.
